Areas Of Expertise

Daniel Freund is an Associate Professor of Operations Management at the MIT Sloan School of Management. His research applies techniques from optimization, stochastic modeling, and revenue management to problems in transportation, online platforms, and humanitarian immigration among others. His work has been recognized, among others, with the PSOR Best Paper Award (2nd place, 2024), the MSOM Best OM Paper in OR Award (2023), the Applied Probability Society Best Publication Award (2021), the George B. Dantzig Dissertation Award (2018), the Daniel H. Wagner Prize for Excellence in Operations Research and Analytics (2018), and a Best Paper award at the ACM SIGCAS COMPASS conference (2018). Daniel is an AE for Operations Research and frequently serves on ACM program committees (e.g., EC, EAAMO, TheWebConf). Professor Freund holds a B.Sc. in mathematics from the University of Warwick (UK), as well as an M.S. and a Ph.D. in applied mathematics from Cornell University, where he was advised by David B. Shmoys. Before joining MIT, Daniel was a postdoc in Lyft's Marketplace Labs team.
Before coming to MIT, Daniel Freund was a research fellow at Lyft Marketplace Labs. Freund has a Ph.D. in applied mathematics from Cornell University. Freund's research focuses on complex decision-making problems in the sharing economy. During his Ph.D., he developed the systems used by bike-sharing companies to ensure there are available bikes spread out among docking stations. Professor research applies techniques from optimization, stochastic modeling, and revenue management to problems in transportation, online platforms, and humanitarian immigration among others.
